Accessibility

Our commitment, where we stand, and how to tell us if something is not working for you.

LightHouse PBC exists to reach people who are often shut out. A website that shuts people out would be a contradiction. We want this site to be usable by everyone, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or voice control.

The standard we build to

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act guidance and by most public bodies.

What we have done

  • Semantic HTML with correct heading order and page landmarks
  • A "skip to content" link as the first item on every page
  • Descriptive alternative text on every meaningful image, and hidden decorative images from screen readers
  • Visible focus outlines on every link, button and form field
  • Full keyboard operation, including the menu and the chat panel, which closes with the Escape key
  • Colour contrast checked against the 4.5:1 requirement for body text
  • Form fields with real labels, not placeholder text standing in for labels
  • Touch targets sized for comfortable use on a phone
  • Respect for the "reduce motion" setting in your operating system, which stops the animations on this site
  • Text that reflows and stays readable when zoomed, and no restriction on pinch zoom

Where we know we fall short

Some content on this site comes from third parties we do not control, including donation and ticketing forms hosted by Zeffy, the volunteer application, and embedded social media. We cannot guarantee those meet the same standard.

If a third party form is a barrier for you, that is never the end of the road. Call 561-386-0031 and we will take your donation, your volunteer application or your event registration over the phone, or by mail if you prefer. You will never be turned away because a form did not work.

Tell us about a barrier

If you hit something on this site you cannot use, we want to hear about it and we will fix it. Please tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and what happened.

We aim to respond within two working days and to resolve genuine barriers as quickly as we can.

Ongoing work

Accessibility is not a box we tick once. We review this site as we add to it, and we welcome being told when we get it wrong.
